Youth4 AM. A quiet time, when not even the earliest risers have stirred from their dream rumpled beds. The night watchmen, such as they are, have long nodded off to sleep, and cars roar seldom cross the black pavement of the nighted roads. In city restaurant the coffee has not yet begun to boil, and in country tavern the last black sludge no longer lurks in the bottom of the deepest pot. The only noise is that of the wind, and a great noise it is, whirling through the trash and weeds that line the darkened streets, carrying with it naught but a strange whistle. A day in the LifeOn the third floor of the Sunnyview apartment complex, Norman Arlington, Norm to his friends (of which there aren’t many) awakes. The sun has not fully risen, and a castoff sort of light seems to shimmer in the air, hinting of the neon excesses of the night while still promising of a new day to come. He dresses, first a shirt, and then pants, pulled on over the dirty boxers he slept in, still reminiscent of perfume (best not to ask from where). He stumbles slightly, the weight of the world re asserting itself.
